一、自杀者的心理特征

1. 认知功能方面：许多学者对自杀者的思维和解决问题的方式进行了研究，发现：（1）自杀者一般认识范围比较狭窄(管视，tunnel vision)，倾向于采取非此即彼和以偏概全的思维方式，以黑白、对错、好坏的简单二分方式（dichotomous fashion）来分析遇到的问题，看不到解决问题的多种途径，在挫折和困难面前不能对自己和周围环境作出客观的评价。（2）在分析问题时，自杀者倾向于固执和被动，将自己遇到的问题归因于命运、运气和客观环境，相信问题是不能忍受带来的痛苦的(intolerable)，是无法解决的(interminable)，是不可避免的(inescapable), 即Chiles所谓的“三是”（Three is）。（3）面对困难时，要么缺乏解决问题的技巧，要么对自己解决问题的能力缺乏正确的估计，或者根本就不作任何的估计，其结果是经常选择了不适当的解决问题的方式。（4）自杀者倾向于缺乏耐心，不现实地期望在很短的时间内能获得成功，如果某一解决问题的方式没有取得直接的、即时的成功，很快就会将其抛弃，结果他们在解决问题方面很难取得真正的成功。更为重要的是，他们把自杀当作一种解决问题的手段，有研究表明，这一点与自杀意愿的强烈程度者之间存在着高度的相关性。（5）倾向于从阴暗面看问题，对人、对己对社会均是如此。表现为对全社会、特别是对周围人群抱有深刻的敌意，从思想上，感情上把自己与社会隔离开来。觉得自己没有前途，看不到个人和社会在将来可能发生的改变（hopelessness）。这种悲观的心理可导致抑郁情绪，进而产生自杀念头。（6）缺乏决断力(indecisiveness)，即犹豫不决，没有主见，同时行为又具有冲动性。
2. 情感方面：（1）自杀者通常有许多慢性的痛苦，焦虑、抑郁、愤怒、厌倦和内疚成为其情感的主要特征。（2）他们对自己的这些负性情绪感到厌恶，很难接受。（3）自杀者通常情绪不稳定，不成熟，表现出神经质倾向。（4）倾向于冲动性地试图排除情感，采取各种方法伤害自己，如酗酒、过量服药、捶胸顿足、用头撞墙、扯头发、暴饮暴食，甚至用锐器伤害手部、胸部和大腿等处的皮肤。
